Mortgage Lending Discrimination
In 1994 a newly married friend of mine called a mortgage broker
for information to purchase a home. The broker excitedly told
her she would come to her house to qualify she and her husband
after asking her a few questions. She arrived, took their information,
and later told them they qualified for a $300,000 loan. They thought
that was strange since they both had high incomes, perfect credit,
and the woman alone already owned a $250,000 home, the man was just
hired for a $220,000 job. So they thought hmmmmmm, maybe this has
something to do with mortgage lending discrimination. Both are
African American. This was in the year 1994.
