Daytrading is the buying and selling of securities several
times a day in the attempt to make a profit from short price
swings in a stock. It is an advanced form of investing.
Turning a
profit and performing as a daytrader is very difficult. Daytrading
requires a tremendous amount of knowledge about the financial
markets and investments in general.
In Daytrading:
- Understand the spread in the trade, the bid price and the
ask price for the same stock is usually different. With a
large spread in the bid and ask price you can lose money
on a trade where you sell too quickly.
- Understand that cost can be excessive when buying and
selling several times a day. Considering that you must
pay a buy
fee, a sell fee, and short-term capital gains taxes.
- Understand the daily market can change suddenly, causing
you to lose money quickly.
- Understand that with daytrading you are competing with
experts who have a lot of information the average investor
will not
have access to.
- Understand that to daytrade just one security you must
have an extensive knowledge about not only securities in
general,
but also the security you are trading. You must have
done thorough research, have access to real-time charts
and graphs,
access to financial news, know the entire factual history
of the company you are trading, including its fundamentals.
- Alternatives to daytrading are swing trading and short
term trading.
